Is It Time To Ditch The Blackberry?
With so many thoughts and ideas travelling through my mind I’m slightly embarrassed to mention that one particular thought is squatting in the frontal lobe – and has in outstayed its welcome. Quite ashamedly we’re in a world where there are many less fortunate than you or I – yet my mind is focussing on whether I should give up the Blackberry for either an Android or Apple handset.
Ok there are work related issues to consider as well. Truth be told I’m sure all smartphones would be able to augment the daily struggle – the question I need to ask here is, ‘what do I really need a mobile device for?’
Well –
- Making calls (I nearly forget about that one)
- Checking and responding to emails – BB, Apple and Android have got that covered. But the iphone’s push capability isn’t as instant as BB’s.
- Texting (SMS) – OK this is getting desperate now – this list is a sham!
- Online browsing – I don’t really spend a lot of time waiting for trains – so it might not get used that often. Actually I do spend a few moments surfing from time to time. A point to mention without Wifi it’s a chore on all devices.
- Utilising Apps – Most of the apps I use are available on the 3 platforms.
OK – that failed miserably, what do I really need? Here goes:
Without mentioning the obvious I need a smartphone that isn’t going to crash every five minutes and won’t do a ‘HAL’ on me if I drop it either accidentally or on purpose, and won’t embarrass me when taken out of my pocket in a crowded area.
So what do I not want?
NOT the iphone – there are horror stories spewed across the net on how the once beautifully aesthetic shattered in an instant (Apple fans be warned don’t google ‘smashed iphone’ it may be upsetting). Then again I could always get a case – but do I want to join the Apple cult?
Blackberry – I dropped a 8900 curve once and it was never the same again. I kept on getting JVM errors. Foolishly I got it replaced with another 8900.
I’m not really going to go into the open vs closed debate. But what about an Android smartphone? I once saw a mugger give back an android handset to his victim. We’ll leave it at that.
Looks like I’m back to square one…
